John and his sister Matilda are children of the same mother without any known biological father. Their mother was a prostitute, but failed to let her only surviving relative, her aged mother, know who was responsible for the pregnancy. She got sick and died leaving both kids to their grandmother who could not take adequate care of them. She too became ill and died a year later and the kids were living skeletons at the time of their registration and adoption into the children's home.
