Daniel, along with his twin sisters Mary and Martha, are siblings born to a couple that lived in a camp in Grafton for people wounded during the war. They were relocated to this camp when the rebels destroyed their entire village and caused bodily harm to them. The father became sick and died when Daniel was still an infant and the jobless mother could not cope with the responsibility of the children. It then became necessary for them to be placed into the home.
