After separating from Augustine's mother his father, a womanizer, died of food poisoning over a disagreement with a woman in a village where witchcraft killings are very common. By then he was living with his grandmother as his mother could not care for him since she had other children to care for by another man. He was suffering from malnutrition at the time he came to the home.
